1154th Year of Burn's Sleep96th Year of the Malazan EmpireThe Last Year of Emperor Kellanved's ReignAt
Mock's Vane, in
Malaz City, Ganoes Stabro Paran stands tiptoe looking over the edge to see the riots in the poorest quarter of the city. A
soldier joins him at his side and asks if he is glad of his noble blood. The boy recognizes him as a commander in The Third - The Emperor's elite and as a
Bridgeburner. Paran asks if it is true that the First Sword of the Empire,
Dassem Ultor, is really dead and that he died in
Y'Ghatan in
Seven Cities. The Third was with him, yet this man is not.
The Soldier is amazed the boy has learned such closed information, and so fast considering they are still searching for the body in the hot rubble. Paran says he heard that Dassem betrayed a god. The soldier tells him to live a life the Gods won't notice but Paran replies "I want to be a soldier. A hero.". The commander says he'll grow out of it.
1161st Year of Burn's Sleep103rd Year of the Malazan Empire7th Year of Empress Laseen's RuleParan, now Lieutenant in the Malazan Army, is joined by
Adjunct Lorn in the examination of the slaughter on the coast of
Itko Kan. Paran explains bodies are missing in two huts. One belonging to an old woman and one belonging to a
young girl and her father. Lorn figures the attack to be magical and mere diversion. She commissions Paran on her staff and orders a search for the missing girl and her father. Paran is sent to the market town of
Gerrom because they would know the fishing village through trade and would know who the young girl and father were.
Gerrom Paran finds the town lifeless, "torn bundles of clothing, broken baskets and trampled vegetables littering the track". Paran enters the Imperial Constabulary to find all the uniformed men dead amongst cooing black pigeons. Their faces are blue, as if they suffocated. In the captain's office he finds all records destroyed.
On the road home Paran meets
Topper, a part
Tiste-Andii mage who is leader of
The Claw. He tells Paran he is to take him to
The Empress with haste. They travel through a
warren Topper opens to
Unta, the capital of The Empire. In Laseen's throne room, she recalls meeting him years ago in Malaz City. Topper takes him to the adjuncts tower and Paran climbs the stairs to her room. Paran informs Lorn what he has seen and she tells him he can return to the Officer Corps. Paran refuses wishing to see this through. Lorn agrees and says his reassignment will take place in a few days so he should go home to his father's estate and rest.
Meningalle OceanParan is in his cabin sailing to Genabackis when Topper appears through warren and tells him that he will take command of Whiskeyjack’s squad who the recruit Sorry is with. He is take them to the city of Darujhistan which is the next city to be taken by the Empire.
GenabarisAt the dock, Paran meets with an agent who tells him he will be transported to Pale with The Moranth.

Has it ever been discussed how House Paran became the crux of so many world-shaking events? Ganoes becomes Master of the Deck, Captain of the Bridgeburners, etc, Tavore is the Adjunct, Felisin becomes a host for Sha'ik....was the family blessed or cursed in some manner, or was it simply Oponn working through Ganoes at the beginning?

There is nothing to indicate why House Paran became such pivotal players.
