Gardens of the Moon: Chapter 13

Setting: Darujhistan

Summary

Kalam and Quick Ben follow Rallick to the warehouse. Rallick, Ocelot and other Guild assassin close on the Malazans, seeking to end the assassins’ war. A dog-sized demon observes the city from above before being attacked from the sky and escaping. The attacker was one of twelve to descend.

The twelve assassin mages slaughter the Guild assassins and attack Quick Ben and Kalam, who defeats two (Jekaral and Boruld). Rallick kills one (Dashtal). Quick Ben uses a Korvalah demon named Pearl to cover their escape. The three Tiste Andii do not flee and another six arrive, the last is Anomander Rake. Pearl is resigned to his death. Quick Ben reveals his real name to be Ben Adaephon Delat.

Quick Ben brings the injured Kalam to Mallet. He joins Fiddler and Hedge “playing” cards (they just sit and stare) while telling Whiskeyjack about the ambush and Tiste Andii attack. They assume Rake is taking out the Guild to prevent the Empire offering a contract.

Sorry follows Crokus to the D’Arle estate. Crokus speaks to Challice as he returns the loot. He leaves and sees Sorry watching him. He approaches the Phoenix Inn and meets Rallick who warns him against continuing with thieving. Sorry eavesdrops and then hears an exchange between Murillio and Rallick.

Serrat reports to Rake. They believe Kalam may be a Claw and Quick Ben a High Mage. The surviving Tiste Andii return to Moon’s Spawn. Rake visits Baruk and brings the small demon which is Baruk’s. Baruk reveals that Vorcan is a High Mage. Rake used Dragnipur on the Korvalah demon.

Kruppe dreams and K’Rul tells him of Tattersail’s accelerated growth and Rake’s alliance with Baruk and the T’orrud Cabal. The Elder God warns him of the Omtose Phellack magic from the Jaghut in the Gadrobi Hills.
