Keneb is an officer in the Malazan military. Before the rebellion on Seven Cities, he was a Captain serving in the Orbal garrison under Colonel Tras. He had a wife, Selv, and two sons, Kesen and Vaneb. Selv's sister is Minala. Following the Chain of Dogs, Keneb adopted a young refugee named Grub.
At the onset of the Sha'ik Rebellion, there was an uprising in Orbal. Colonel Tras was killed in unknown circumstances and Captain Keneb lead the surviving refugees south from Orbal with the remains of the Malazan garrison as escort. They were attacked by soldiers of the Whirlwind and only Keneb and his family are known to have survived, though Keneb was injured by being dragged behind a horse. Shortly after the attack, the group encountered Kalam Mekhar who escorted them to Aren through the Imperial Warren. In Aren, Keneb joined Commander Blistig's garrison forces. His wife and sons returned to Quon Tali. Keneb also adopted Grub, a foundling boy who survived the Chain of Dogs.
Upon the creation of the Malazan 14th Army, Keneb was transferred to Fist Gamet's 8th Legion and was given command of the 9th Company. Following the Battle of Raraku and the death of Fist Gamet, Keneb was promoted to Fist and assumed command of the 8th Legion. He continued to serve in this capacity throughout the remainder of the Sha'ik Rebellion and throughout the 14th Army's invasion of Lether.
'Short and wide, he wore the tattered remnants of an Outpost detachment uniform, light-grey leather jerkin, dark-grey surcoat. His face was covered in a network of scratches, as were his hands and forearms. A deep wound marred his bristly chin, and the helm shadowing his eyes was dented. The clasp of his surcoat ranked him a captain.'
