Shortnose is a heavy infantryman of the 9th Company, 8th Legion, 14th Army and one of The Bonehunters. He was originally a member of Sergeant Tugg's squad. He married Hanno approximately a week before the Last Siege of Y'Ghatan. Shortnose is best known for his penchant for losing body parts, especially facial parts, including an ear and the tip of his nose.

While it never explicitly states what squad Shornose is in pre-Y'Ghatan, Bottle encounters him fighting Saltlick in a gathering of Sgt Tugg and Sgt Sobelone's squads. His marriage to Hanno might make one think that he is in Sobelone's squad, but during the Last Siege of Y'Ghatan he joins up with Fiddler's group before reaching the temple, as if he was from Tugg's squad, whereas the survivors of Sobelone's squad join with Hellian. Thus I placed him Tugg's squad.
