What is Kurald Liosan

What is Kurald Liosan?

For each of the Tiste races we know so well, there is a Kurald warren associated. The Tiste Andii have Kurald Galain (Darkness), and the Tiste Edur have Kurald Emurlahn (Shadow).

Until BH, the Tiste Liosan seemed to continue this simple relationship, having one known warren. Kurald Thyrllan (Light).

But then, in BH, Cotillion referred to both Kurald Thyrllan and Kurald Liosan (ref needed), in such a way that the two appeared to be distinct. Apparently Gesler, Stormy and Truth had passed through the fires of Kurald Liosan during their trip on the Silanda in DG, producing their burnished skin and the pursuit by the four Tiste Liosan we saw in HoC.

So what is Kurald Liosan? And how does it differ from Kurald Thyrllan?

At this point, there is no ready answer.

All we can do is note that, alone among the three Tiste races, the Tiste Liosan still reside permanently in their warren. Perhaps this has led to some kind of separation of function, bearing in mind that warrens seem to serve two principal functions:

a) power source for magic

b) physical space, forming both shortcuts and residential space

Perhaps Kurald Liosan is where the Tiste Liosan live, and Kurald Thyrllan is the warren they draw on for power? This is nothing more than a guess, since we just don't know enough about the race. The fact that the Tiste Liosan appear to rely on a priesthood rather than mages for their magic is one spanner in the works.

In summary: we just don't know.

In the glossary in "Return of the Crimson Guard", Kurald Thyrllan and Kurald Liosan are explicitly said to be different names for the same thing.
