One of the Elder Races.

The K'Chain Che'Malle are an ancient reptilian race long thought to be extinct, living in hive-like societies with a Matron. K'Chain Che'malle possessed both advanced technology and formidable sorcery, yielding such results as Skykeeps and anti-gravitational effects. They eventually colonized nearly all the continents across the planet. The entire race was eventually nearly entirely wiped out by a combination of internal conflicts between sub-species of the race and invasions from the Tiste races.

Sub-species:

The K'Chain Che'malle have a number of established racial variations.

Matrons

The Matrons are the queens of any K'Chain Che'malle hive. They give birth to all the K'Chain Che'malle within the colony.

K'ell

The K'ell, or Hunters, are warriors with large blades protruding from their arms in place of hands. K'ell can live up to about a thousand years.

Shi'gal

The Shi'gal are powerful assassins. Common practice dictates that a Matron births three Shi'gal and doesn't create any more unless one is killed. Each of the three Shi'gal are created with characteristics that make them anathema to the other two Shi'gal, so that they will never form an alliance and an attempted assassination of the Matron will be opposed by the other two. Unlike other K'Chain sub-species, Shi'gal do not die of old age.

J'an

The J'an, also known as Sentinels, are guards within the K'Chain Che'malle colony, protecting the Matron.

Ve'gath

The Ve'gath are the soldier class of the K'Chain Che'malle. The Ve'gath are a painful brith for the Matron.

"He had survived sixty-one centuries of life, of growth, and was twice the height of a full-grown K'ell Hunter, for unlike the Hunters – who were flavoured with mortality's sudden end at the close of ten centuries – the Shi'gal possessed no such flaw in their making. They could, potentially, outlive the Matron herself."  --Shi'gal Gu'Rull

"J'an Sentinels observed her arrival from the foot of the half-spiral stairs that led to the Nest." --thoughts of Kalyth

DoD, Prologue

"Ve'Gath Soldiers stood flanking the central ramp, twice her height and in their arcane armour resembling the vast machinery of Root far below. Ornate grilled visors hid their faces save their fanged snouts, and the line of their jaws gave them ghastly grins, as if the implicit purpose of their breed delighted them. More so than the J'an or the K'ell, the true soldiers of the K'Chain Che'Malle frightened Kalyth to the very core of her being. The Matron was producing them in vast numbers.

No further proof was needed – war was coming.

That the Ve'Gath gave the Matron terrible pain, each one thrust out from her in a welter of blood and pungent fluid, had become irrelevant."
